In 1061 Bela changed the Market Day from the traditional Sunday to Saturday which may have been part of an attempt to remove the Jews from the commercial activity of the kingdom. 1185: Alfonso I the Conqueror, king of Portugal passed away at the age of 76.Alfonso’s connection with Jewish history is indirect.Until he proclaimed himself king, Portugal was part of Spain.Alfonso’s successful secession came only after bitter fighting between him and the Spanish.This delayed the attempts by the Spanish monarchs to drive the Moors from the Iberian Peninsula.
